I'm interested in pitch of octave-complex tones (Shepard tones), which are defined in their pitch classes but not in their pitch height. Playing such tones in chromatical order several times, it occurs the illusion of an ever ascending or descending pitch. A similiar illusion in the visual domain is known as Escher Staircase.
The so called tritone paradox occurs, when listeners judge the pitch of two Shepard tones in tritonus interval. Their judgments depend systematically on the pitch classes of the tones. However, listeners disagree substantially whether a tone pair is falling or rising in pitch.

In my thesis, I postulate a probabilistic pitch theory for Shepard tones pairs to modulate pitch phenomena of Shepard tones. This is an adapted version of Ernst Terhardt's Virtual pitch theory.
